The neutrons provided in the reactors are used in basic research and for medical and industrial applications: from the production of radioisotopes for cancer therapy through to the improvement of lithium-ion batteries. The research reactors use fuel elements to produce the neutron flows needed for experiments and measurements. After they have been used, the fuel elements from the research reactors in Garching, Berlin and Mainz will be packed in CASTOR casks and stored in the Ahaus interim storage facility. After their interim storage, fuel elements will be disposed of in a repository for highly radioactive waste.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-7bl4l-e50e8700b469811a457bf0fde3983067\">\n.flex_column.av-7bl4l-e50e8700b469811a457bf0fde3983067{\nborder-radius:0px 0px 0px 0px;\npadding:0px 0px 0px 0px;\n}\n<\/style>\n<div  class='flex_column av-7bl4l-e50e8700b469811a457bf0fde3983067 av_one_half  avia-builder-el-4  el_after_av_one_full  el_before_av_one_half  first flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding  column-top-margin'     ><section  class='av_textblock_section av-ko1hdxip-83418b13c7f0501053913af5023f3cc5 '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/CreativeWork\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>The place where CASTOR casks with fuel elements will be stored after they have been used must be stipulated in the applicable licensing procedure before research reactors can go into operation in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The Ahaus interim storage facility will be used to store fuel elements from German research reactors. Fuel elements from the research reactor that was operated in Dresden-Rossendorf between 1957 and 1991 have been stored at the Ahaus site, which is operated by BGZ, since 2005.<\/p>\n<p>An agreement was reached with the Municipality of Ahaus as early as 1993 enabling fuel elements from German research reactors to be stored in the Ahaus interim storage facility, provided that a license is granted under nuclear law. On this basis, contracts were agreed between operators of the research reactors and the operator of the Ahaus interim storage facility concerning the future emplacement of research reactor fuel elements. These contracts are now coming into effect.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" The research reactor is located in Garching near Munich and is a central scientific facility of the Technical University of Munich (TUM). container body of the CASTOR MTR3 effectively shields the radiation coming from the inventory. The container\u2019s lid system, which consists of solid steel lids, metal seals and screw fittings, safely and reliably encloses the fuel elements when they are transported and stored and dissipates the heat produced by the waste by transferring it through the inner structures and the container body.<\/p>\n<p>As the fuel elements from the research reactors are considerably smaller than those coming from nuclear power stations, the dimensions of the CASTOR MTR3 are smaller than containers for fuel elements taken from nuclear power stations or vitrified waste block canisters from reprocessing.<\/p>\n<p>The heat output of spent research fuel elements is also much lower. The CASTOR MTR3 is licensed for maximum heat output of around 0.29 kilowatts (kW)<sup>[1]<\/sup>.
