Safety mission

In spring 2023, the last German nuclear power plant was taken off the grid. However, it will take decades for Germany to safely and permanently dispose of the legacy of the nuclear age. One of the essential actors in this process is BGZ Gesellschaft für Zwischenlagerung mbH. BGZ is responsible for storing radioactive waste until repositories have been established. BGZ was founded in 2017. Its sole shareholder is the Federal Republic of Germany.

Our interim storage facilities

We ensure the safe and reliable operation of interim storage facilities for low, medium and high-level radioactive waste.

Detailed information on all sites of BGZ interim storage facilities in Germany can be found here.

Head office in Essen and branch in Berlin

BGZ is headquartered in Essen. An additional branch in Berlin ensures that BGZ is also represented in the German capital.

BGZ.lab

BGZ is represented by a research group on the campus of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Garching. At BGZ.lab, BGZ employees work together with TUM students to investigate the ageing behaviour of fuel elements and other important topics. BGZ.lab thereby contributes to the research programme in a significant way.

We would be happy to provide you with information about our work on site. Visit us at our information centres in Ahaus and Gorleben where you will find clear answers on any issues relating to safe and reliable interim storage and where personal exchange is our priority.

High-level radioactive waste

Low- and medium-level
radioactive waste

The transfer of the Krümmel interim storage facility and the fuel element interim storage facility at the Brunsbüttel site to BGZ is still ongoing.

Events calendar

Questions arise wherever radioactive waste is stored. BGZ therefore organises regular information events at all its sites. At training and job fairs, we provide information about career paths at BGZ and recruit new specialists and young talent for our growing team. We also regularly hold specialist workshops and our iconic series of events entitled “Interim Storage Forum”.
