Expert report on the determination of high water levels
Nine months before the devastating floods of summer 2021 in western Germany, BGZ commissioned an expert report on the potential flood risk of the planned Logistics Centre Konrad (LoK). The study, by renowned flood expert Professor Jürgen Jensen from the University of Siegen, concludes that the proposed construction site is not located in the Weser’s floodplain. The site is more than a metre above the expected flood level, which statistically occurs once every 100 years. Even in the event of a ‘millennium flood’, a shallow area of water would only form to the north of the site. In the case of facilities such as the LoK, safety must also be guaranteed in the event of a 10,000-year flood. The BGZ will take even this extremely unlikely scenario into account by raising the ground level accordingly.
