MuTomCa – Muon Tomography for Shielded Casks

Subject matter:Conducting a field trial to test the suitability of muon tomography for the re-inspection of spent fuel elements packed in self-shielding transport and storage casks
Organisation:» The Directorate-General for Energy of the European Community (EURATOM DG ENER-E), together with the BMUV, has launched a project to research new safeguards techniques for the dry interim storage of spent fuel elements.
» Realisation with the Forschungszentrum Jülich (project coordinator), the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) and the EURATOM DG ENER-E
» Realisation at the Grafenrheinfeld interim storage facility
Project period:2020 to 2024
Since its launch in September 2020, the international MuTomCa consortium, led by INFN Padua together with Forschungszentrum Jülich, EURATOM and BGZ, has been developing a muon detector based on drift tubes to non-invasively map the contents of CASTOR® dry storage casks.

This method focuses on proliferation (safeguards). During a field campaign in 2023 at BGZ’s interim storage facility in Grafenrheinfeld, muon imaging data was successfully recorded on two CASTOR ® V/19 casks with different loads, demonstrating that fuel-free dummy fuel elements can be recognised. The project was funded by the BMUKN (FKZ 02W6279) and EURATOM Safeguards programmes, among others. The results are documented in several publications and the project reports. BGZ uses the findings to further develop its monitoring and safety concepts in the VisCas project.
